Claude vs Gemini for SEO: the honest comparison

LH Lawrence Hitches 27 July 2026 9 min read
TL;DR
  • Claude is a tool you run. Gemini is built by Google, the company that ranks you. That single fact reshapes the whole comparison.
  • On the six jobs in the table below, Claude takes installable process work, codebase audits and repeatable output. Gemini takes native Google integration, AI Overview research and a very large context window.
  • The comparison nobody runs: whose crawler actually reads your site. The logs show ClaudeBot and Google's crawlers behaving nothing alike.

Both models do real SEO work. One of them is made by the search engine you are trying to rank in, which changes what using it for SEO even means. Here is the honest comparison, losses included.

Claude and Gemini both handle audits, briefs and content work. Claude suits repeatable process work because skills install as versioned files your whole team runs identically. Gemini suits anything Google-native, because Gemini is Google's model, wired into Search, AI Overviews and Workspace. This page compares them on the SEO jobs that matter, using live data from a running experiment.

What is the real difference between Claude and Gemini for SEO?

The real difference between Claude and Gemini for SEO is who makes them. Claude is a tool you run over your own work. Gemini is built by Google, the same company that ranks your pages and writes the AI Overviews you are trying to appear in.

Every other comparison treats them as two interchangeable chat boxes. They are not. Choosing Gemini means working inside the ecosystem that judges you. Choosing Claude means running an independent process over your own repo and data. That distinction decides most of the task-by-task calls below, starting with what each one does to your rankings.

Which one actually ranks your pages?

Neither model ranks your pages by typing into it. On this site, the one being measured is Claude, running an autonomous SEO loop since 16 July 2026, judged on a single number: the average Google position of a fixed target-query set.

Target queryBaseline (16 Jul)Latest read
best claude seo software43.533.3
claude seo tool46.738.2
claude seo checkers54.140.8
Set average48.137.4

That 37.4 is an in-flight trend, not a scored result. The measurement window does not match the baseline window, and the early fixes had only days of runtime inside it. The honest read is that the set is moving in the right direction and the loop has not yet proven the movement is its own doing rather than a young site maturing.

Gemini's relationship to ranking is different in kind. It does not optimise your site. It is part of how Google surfaces answers, through AI Overviews. So the honest framing is that Claude is a tool that works on your rankings, and Gemini is closer to the surface you are ranking in. Which raises the question of who actually reads your pages.

Which one crawls and cites your site?

Both companies crawl your site, and Google and Anthropic do it nothing alike. This is the comparison almost nobody runs, because it treats these models as distribution surfaces rather than tools you type into.

A second experiment runs a 111-page comparison site instrumented with Cloudflare AI Crawl Control. One disclosure first, because it changes how you read the numbers: the site runs on a dropped domain with prior history going back to 2015. It is not a clean slate, and pre-existing familiarity almost certainly sped up the first crawl.

ClaudeBot covered the whole site within twenty-four hours, making 124 of the 187 AI-crawler requests logged on day one. Google's crawlers behave differently by design: Googlebot crawls for Search, and Google-Extended is a separate control for whether your content is used to improve Gemini. PerplexityBot never arrived. The Gemini-specific point follows from that split: because Gemini draws on Google's index and on pages that allow Google-Extended, being visible to Gemini is downstream of being crawlable by Google, not a separate optimisation you run in the chat window.

It matters because crawling decides citation, and citation is where the traffic is moving. Siege Media analysed 116 B2B analytics properties covering 1,112 comparison pages and found that versus pages predict AI-search traffic more strongly than any other content type, at a Spearman correlation of 0.65, roughly double the next-best template. That is the honest ceiling on what content alone can do, which is worth weighing before you pick a tool.

One is a tool. One is the referee. Claude A tool you run over your own site Installable skills in your repo Codebase audits via Claude Code Independent of the search engine Works ON your rankings Gemini Built by Google, who ranks you Powers AI Overviews Wired into Search and Workspace Fed by Googlebot and Google-Extended Part of the surface you rank IN vs claudeseoskills.com.au · Lawrence Hitches
The structural difference: Claude works on your site, Gemini is part of the surface you rank in.

How do they compare task by task?

Task by task, Claude takes the independent process work and Gemini takes anything Google-native. The table below scores six jobs an SEO team actually does in a week.

TaskWinnerWhy
Repeatable audits with fixed outputClaudeSkills install once and run the same process every time, across a whole team
Codebase-level technical auditsClaudeClaude Code reads your repo, writes a report, stages fixes as commits. Gemini has no equivalent
Native Google Search, GSC and Workspace workGeminiIt is a Google product, sitting inside the tools your data already lives in
Researching AI Overview visibilityGeminiIt is the model family behind Google's AI Overviews, so it shows how Google frames a topic
Very large documents and crawl exportsDrawBoth handle long context well, and Gemini's is among the largest available
Independence from the search engineClaudeNot made by the company that ranks you, so its judgment is not the referee's judgment

The split is not about intelligence. It follows from ownership: Claude is independent of Google, and Gemini is Google, which helps on Google-native work and complicates everything about ranking.

Where does Gemini honestly win?

Gemini honestly wins wherever the work touches Google directly. Three places, stated plainly, because a page published by a Claude library has to earn its verdict rather than assert it.

  • Google-native integration. Gemini sits inside Search, Workspace, Docs and Sheets. If your data and workflow already live in Google, that gravity is real and Claude does not have it.
  • AI Overview research. Gemini is the model family behind Google's AI Overviews, so it is the most direct way to see how Google's own AI frames a query you want to appear for.
  • Reach and cost. Gemini is free with a Google account and carries one of the largest context windows available, which suits very large documents and long exports.

None of which makes Gemini the independent process layer, which is where the cost question lands.

What does each one cost to run?

Running SEO work through either model costs the price of a standard consumer plan for ordinary use, and Gemini is free with a Google account. The autonomous loop on this site costs between fifty cents and one dollar in tokens per run, against a five dollar cap.

Every comparison publishes the per-million-token price and stops there. Nobody converts it to the number you budget against, which is cost per deliverable. On that measure both are cheap, so cost rarely decides it. What decides it is whether you want a tool that is independent of Google or one that is part of it.

The verdict

Run Claude when you want an independent, repeatable process over your own site: installable skills, codebase audits, work that runs unattended. The evidence for that here is a loop running since 16 July, a target-set average moving from 48.1 toward an in-flight 37.4, and a monthly cost under a dollar.

Choose Gemini when the job is Google-native: researching AI Overviews, working inside Workspace, or handling very large documents for free. Use both if you are honest about which jobs each wins.

The part worth keeping has nothing to do with picking a side. One of these tools is made by the company that ranks you, and their crawlers read your site nothing alike. Whichever you type into, run a process rather than vibes: the Claude vs ChatGPT comparison runs the same test against OpenAI, the Claude vs Perplexity comparison checks whether an answer engine can even reach you, the skills library is the process we publish, and the setup guide shows what running it looks like.

FAQ

Is Claude or Gemini better for SEO?

It depends on the job. Claude suits an independent, repeatable process over your own site: installable skills, codebase audits, work that runs unattended. Gemini suits Google-native tasks: researching AI Overviews, working inside Workspace, and handling very large documents for free. They are not the same category of tool.

Does Gemini help you rank in Google?

Not directly by typing into it. Gemini is Google's model, wired into AI Overviews, so being visible to it is downstream of being crawlable and ranking well in Google, not a separate lever you pull inside the chat window.

Which one gets you cited in AI search?

No model cites you by choice. Their crawlers decide. In a week of logs on a 111-page test site, ClaudeBot covered the whole site in a day, Google's crawlers behaved differently, and PerplexityBot never arrived. Being crawlable and comparison-shaped matters more than which chat window you draft in.

Can I use both Claude and Gemini for SEO?

Yes, and many teams should. Run Claude for independent process and technical work, and Gemini for Google-native research and AI Overview visibility. Stop treating it as one choice.
